Super Bowl Day Drunk Driver
Off. Witalison was sent to a report of a car off the road on Hwy
12&18 between Stoughton Rd. and the Interstate
at 11:40pm. The car was some distance off the road. Someone driving by happened to see the car's
lights among some small trees. Off. Witalison found the female driver still in the car and
unharmed. Her only concern was that she
couldn't find her car keys.
These are a few of
the statements she made to Off. Witalison.
- She could not recall what
happened before the accident but did not believe she was driving because
"I wouldn't drive off the road into some $#@% weeds."
- She had been drinking "all
night" at a West side bar, but was not intoxicated.
- She does not know how she ended
up East of Hwy 51, since that's where she turns off to go home and stated
it was not possible that she just missed the exit.
- "Why am I am trouble and
my passengers aren't?" Before
and after this statement the woman had told the officer that she had been
alone.
- She stated the police were
"making a big @%# deal out of nothing". "Somebody's probably being raped
right now and you're all down here making a big deal out of this."
- The woman was arrested for
drunk driving and tested .25, two and one half times the legal limit.
BMW Stolen by Juvenile
On Jan. 23, a man
left his jacket in an unsecured locker at the YMCA. In his jacket pocket was $80 and the keys to
his 2002 BMW. When he returned to the
locker, the jacket and money were still there but his car keys and car were
gone. On the next day, the East High School Officer Sue Carnell heard rumors of
a student stealing a BMW. She contacted
the 16 yr old boy, and he eventually admitted to the theft. The boy stated that when he went to the locker
room, he opened the unsecured locker, and saw the car keys in the jacket
pocket. When he saw that the keys had a
remote, which would make it easy to locate the car, he decided to steal the
car. The car was recovered near East
High.

Phone Scam (Reprinted from the North District Newsletter)
I verified some of
this information is true with a security representative from a local provider.
The 90# is a scam that works on business or hospital phones, for instance. It
involves a telephone call from an individual identifying himself as an AT&T
Service technician who is conducting a test on telephone lines. He states that
to complete the test. The customer
should touch nine (9), zero (0), the pound sign (#), and then hang up.
Luckily, this
citizen was suspicious and refused. Upon contacting the telephone company, I
was informed that by pushing 90#, if you are a business, you give the
requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which enables them to
place long distance calls billed to your phone number.
I was further
informed that this scam has been originating from many local jails/prisons. I
have also verified this information with UCB Telecom, Pacific Bell, MCI, Bell
Atlantic and GTE. Please beware. If you
have a business phone, DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE.
Now, the comparable
scam for residential telephone service is to have the person answering the
phone press *72 during the phone conversation. That will forward your phone
line to the suspect's line. That gives
them access to make local and long distance phone calls from their location.
The security representative said when that feature is in operation you will
hear a "chirping" noise when the phone would normally ring. To remove this feature you would enter *73.
The best advice is
to call your telephone company if you have any questions or visit their
website.
That's
all for now. Hope you are all
surviving the cold temperatures.
Be careful. Be safe.
