Madison Water Utility Well 29

Notorious East-Side Well Gets New Filter
April 16, 2009

The first iron and manganese filtration system installed on a Madison Water Utility Well is up and running providing clearer water to customers on Madison's east-side (including the RNA).

The filtration system was installed on Well 29 on North Thompson Road this past winter in response to concerns about discolored water.  The well had been taken out of service so the filtration system could be installed.

"We placed this well on stand-by status last June, relying on other wells that had less iron and manganese," said Tom Heikkinen, general manager for Madison Water Utility.  "Now, with the new filter, we will be providing our customers with the high-quality, clear water they expect and deserve."

The dedication of the new $1.8 million filtration facility will take place on July 11.

The system will undergo an initial 30-day "shakeout" period, but when it is operating at full-throttle, it will deliver about 1.6 million gallons of water per day.

Work on Well 29 Underway
By Jeremy Kautza, RNA Webmaster
December 10, 2008

Construction began in October on the building addition that will house an iron and manganese filter at Well 29 in the Ridgewood Neighborhood.  This work will continue through the winter with an expected completion date of June 1, 2009.

The filter was determined to be a necessity as ground water minerals have been problematic since the well's inception in 2005.  Naturally occuring iron and manganese discolored the water coming from the well.  Although the levels experienced did not pose a health hazard, the minerals had the potential to stain laundry and plumbing fixtures.  As a result, the utility is installing the filter to remove the unwanted minerals.

Public Meeting on East-Side Water Quality Scheduled
By Joe Campana, RNA Council
April 16, 2008

Unless you have just moved into the neighborhood, you are aware that the City of Madison has had a serious and controversial water quality problem for the last couple of years.  What you may not know is that the majority of the problem lies within our neighborhood.  The most problematic well (#29) is located in the Ridgewood Neighborhood on N. Thompson Drive.

A solution to the contaminated drinking water in our neighborhood is to filter the water.  This is a potential solution, yet it leaves many questions unanswered about the quality of the water coming into our homes.

Our neighborhood has been very active and involved over the last several years, especially on issues relating to development and to traffic. However, this very important issue of water quality and our childrens' health has not received our attention and involvement as it should.

The City is holding a neighborhood meeting next Wednesday Evening, April 23rd from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at the Eastside Streets Facility. The facility is at 4602 Sycamore Avenue across the street from the dog park.

It is my understanding that the City only sent a notice out to a limited number of neighbors, even though this issue affects everyone within several neighborhoods in our region. I don't know what the reason is for such a limited mailing when in fact we have such a widespread and serious issue. For this reason, I ask you to take a moment and contact your neighbors to make them aware of of the issue and the importance of attending this meeting.

It is obvious from the public safety meetings held on the Westside last year, that neighbors attending meetings and speaking up will cause the City to take action. You may recall that only after many people attended those meetings and spoke out, that the mayor and the common council supported the hiring of over 20 new police officers to help control our growing crime problem.

Your attendance at this meeting on our drinking water can make a difference.

N. Thompson to get New Well
By Jeremy Kautza, RNA Webmaster
January 17, 2003

A City of Madison Water Utility Well and Pumping Station has been proposed for 829 N. Thompson Dr. (more specifically at North Thompson, Prairie Rose and Twin Pines Drives).

You may have noticed the well being drilled over the last year or two in our neighborhood.  The project to build the pumping station goes before the Plan Commission on January 27, 2003.

If anyone wants to review the plans for this project contact Joe Campana at 244-4772.  We had one neighbor review the plans for the new pumping station. That neighbor had concerns about sufficient lighting to deter vandalism yet not too much lighting to be a nusance to those homes in the immediate area.

You may also contact Alan Larson at the Madison Water Utility for further Information or voice your thoughts to the plan commission by attending their meeting (Room 201 City-County Bldg.) on Monday, January 27 at 6pm.  If you have the desire, you have the power to stop, alter, or facilitate that project.
